What are the Benefits of Independent Living Communities?

September 20, 2018

As we or our loved ones age, the prospect of moving into an independent living community looms large. For the current generation of seniors, it may not be something they had ever envisioned. That unexpectedness can lead to anxiety, with thoughts turning quickly to all of the perceived drawbacks of moving into an independent living community: “I’ll be coddled.” “I’ll lose my independence.” “I’ll be lonely.” “It won’t be home.”

These anxieties are normal. But thankfully, they’re at odds with the current landscape of independent living for seniors. So let’s examine them one by one.

Assistance with Chores & Cooking

In an independent living community, staff is not there to get in your way. On the contrary, the entire goal of independent living is to clear your path so you can focus on living your life to the fullest. Apartment-style homes form a community of active, engaged seniors. So where does the staff come in?

You know all those pesky parts of keeping up with the house? Changing light bulbs, vacuuming, dusting, crouching and scrubbing—that’s all taken care of for you. You can kiss those time-consuming outdoor tasks goodbye as well. No more mowing, weeding, or shoveling. You’ve got your own apartment that you can be proud of in a vibrant, beautiful community that you can look around with satisfaction. And freed from the myriad tasks required to keep up with it all, you can actually enjoy it.

And we almost forgot the best part. Don’t feel like cooking? Enjoy chef-prepared meals in the dining room. You’ve got way too much gusto to be coddled. But being taken care of? That’s something you’ve earned.

One of the most overlooked aspects of life in an independent living community is the ability to maintain privacy. With apartment-style homes, privacy is just a closed door away. Peace and quiet come standard, which is at odds with the loud, chaotic facilities folks often imagine. But that’s not exactly independence, right? What about opening the door and getting out and about? Once again, an independent living community is there to empower, not to prohibit.

For many seniors, options to leave their home decline. Maybe vision or other health issues, or family concerns, have taken driving off the table. In an independent living facility, not only is your time your own again, so is your ability to use it as you see fit. Buy tickets to see a show, make plans to meet friends or family out for shopping, or plan your perfect outing, and rely on the included community transportation services to get you where you’re going when you want to go there. Or explore the myriad options available right in your community.

Activities and Events

Loneliness is a major concern for seniors. All of the constraints we’ve described—the increasing time required for routine tasks, the inability to travel—leave seniors feeling isolated. But in independent living, you’re surrounded by a vibrant community of people who, like yourself, have recently regained their time and independence. Independent living communities pride themselves on providing a robust activity and event schedule, giving you plenty of opportunities to interact with your new neighbors. In independent living, residents find something they never expected: a new and growing social circle.

Creating a New Home

Especially if you’re moving out of a place you’ve lived in for many years, a place you’ve raised your family, it can be difficult to imagine that the word “home” could ever apply to anywhere else. But independent living communities provide a fresh start. And one day, amid taking a walk, attending a community event, catching up with new friends, and enjoying a great meal in the dining room, , that feeling of being home may sneak up on you when you least expect it.

It’s a wonderful feeling, and one we hope each and every one of our residents here at Lexington Square experiences. We know that one blog post can only go so far in assuaging fears and anxieties.
