Dorothy Lucas took the bull by the horns.  She decided it was time for her to move into a senior living community and was determined that the decision would be hers.  “My kids were thrilled,” she said, adding, “So was I. I looked at several area communities, and this was just warm and personal. And the beautiful atrium sold me.”

Lucas has been a resident of Lexington Square Senior Living Community in Lombard for approximately two years and has loved it.  She said she especially likes the one-bedroom, one-bath Dover model, which has large rooms and closets. “It fits my needs. It’s really spacious. My grandson comes and has lunch with me and says it’s just like walking into the living room at my house. It’s just about the same size, but the bedroom here is even larger than the one in my home; I’m able to also use it as an office. Just everything about this model made me want it over any others.”

Lucas has found the residents and staff at Lexington to be extremely friendly, and she’s been involved with many programs and activities.  “I was on the resident council for a year and then thought I’d be done but got talked into staying. I’m the floor representative and welcome new residents and make sure they know the ins and outs of the floor and where the game room is. I confirm that they have someone to eat with.”

“I’ll do volunteer work when they have something with which the staff needs help. Before we reopened in-person dining post-COVID, I’d deliver the dining menus to everyone’s rooms, and I’d help bring carts of groceries up,” she said. “Just whatever I’m able to do to help.”

Lucas said she typically dines with five girlfriends at the retirement community, adding, “We have so much fun. We make a lot of noise, laughing at silly stuff. That makes my dinner. I come back from dinner with a smile on my face.”

Lucas said that Lexington was a great move for her and the timing was perfect. ‘I really like the camaraderie. I think the staff and residents are very cordial.”
